Like the days of drive-in movies, there’s something romantic and comforting about the days of passenger trains.
Remember the dining car scene in North by Northwest where Cary Grant meets Eva Marie Saint for the first time? Linen table cloths and a flower vase on the table. . .
But there’s no money to be made in passenger trains anymore or Burlington Northern would be running them right now. That’s the reason Governor-elect John Kasich is right to refuse the building of a commuter rail in Ohio. If the private sector sees no profit in running passenger trains again, why does the government think it’s a good idea? Just look at what AmTrack costs us every day for proof that this is a losing proposition.
On the other hand, if passenger trains were available to me, and I don’t mean AmTrack, I’d never fly again. I’d take a train, run by the private sector, almost anywhere rather than fly. I wonder how many people feel the same way I do. Flying has become such a major hassle, that I don’t plan to ever fly again unless in the event of a family emergency. I can get back to Wyoming in less than 24 hours, by car, with a lot less government intrusion.
I’m in favor of the opt-on day that is being promoted online. Opt-out of naked body scans and cause a slow down in the procedures. Go for it! Our security is reactive not proactive. We create another layer of security after another threat is thwarted. We have to take off our shoes because some IslamoFacist boarded a plane with explosives in his shoes. Body scans now because another tried to blow up a plane with explosives in his shorts. And in that case, it was an alert passenger who risked his life to thwart that attack – not an air marshal.
The headline at Drudge today is “The Terrorists Have Won.” That is absolutely correct. The airlines are nickle and dime-ing us for an extra suitcase, a blanket or a glass of Coke. We’ve given up the right to a comfortable and quick way to travel and our privacy to fear.
I am quite frankly tired of it all and I’m just not going to fly anymore.

Hi J! Good to see you.
In metro areas, like the one you live in, mass transportation is sensible. Unfortunately, because it’s government run, it’s costly and poorly managed. It should be privatized and would be much more successful.
the only place out west that mass transportation makes any sense is in the L.A. metro area. Otherwise, it’s a waste of money because no one will ever be riding it. No ONE will ride a train from Las Vegas to Anaheim. Period. End of story. This is nothing more than Harry Reid’s fantasy. If this were such a swell and PROFITABLE idea, Union Pacific would be doing it already. But for some reason, you can’t seem to make the government and it’s insipid politicians like Reid to ‘GET IT’!
There is an entirely different culture of driving people in the west than there is in the east. And the metro areas go on for miles and miles there. Out here for example, there is nothing between my house and Las Vegas, 100 miles away and then once I get to Las Vegas on this imaginary train, how would I get around in the city? Take a cab or a bus? LOL Not on your life! And in all seriousness, how many people would be on that train every day? Maybe 1 and the conductor. There is no heavy traffic on a daily basis from Phoenix to Las Vegas or from Anaheim to Vegas. It’s just not there or the private sector would already be cashing in on this.
So dolly, I agree with public transportation in the metro areas where you live. The population density is so much different than it is out here. If they want to put money into public transportation in the eastern corridor, that’s fine with me. But it will not work in the west and we in the west will not be “coerced out of our cars” to take trains with Maybe 2 passengers on them.

I lived in DC and in Philly. I rarely took my car into town. I love good SAFE public transportation. Believe me with I95 the way it is today, I always took Amtrak to Rhode Island to visit my family there.
I am for reeducating the American public about the benefits of public transportation.

You have an excellent point. Sad to say, we would first have to educate people about curbing urban sprawl!
I live in Western, NY now and it would not make much sense here either.
I thought you were in Ohio or something. Geeze. I need to pay attention.
