It was his failure to understand the difference between an act of war and a crime [1993 World Trade Center bombing] that undermined President Clinton’s administration’s anti-terror efforts and led directly to 9-11. It would appear that President Obama is going down the same road of denial and minimization of political harm. There may be casualties at Ft. Hood, but Obama is determined that his popularity will not be among them.

If this terrorist is convicted, and it seems likely that he will be, the question of whether or not Obama will even approve this conviction is a good one. Hasan’s case will be tied up in military court for over 5 years, and could be in the system for as long as 15. That means that, God willing, there will be a new president and one who won’t hesitate to mete out the justice that those tragically dead and injured deserve.
This is the first time in my life that I have even entertained the thought that the president might NOT support a death penalty conviction in a case like this. But I think it’s a good question and one that should be considered: Would Obama approve a death sentence handed down by the military justice system?
With this president, I have my doubts.
