Government health care should scare everyone

There are sad, hard luck stories of people who can’t afford the health care they need. They can’t get or keep their insurance due to major or catastrophic medical issues.

No one understands that any better than I do.

I’ve been blessed to have health insurance that for whatever reason, covers my condition. The amazing thing about that is that my insurance company still took me on even with a pre-existing condition and covers my medical bills and my prescriptions. Now the fact that I applied for this insurance a mere 3 weeks before I had any clue that I had a problem, might be part of it, but I doubt it. And believe me, I worry that one day it will become too expensive for my insurance company to continue to cover me. If this healthcare reform shit goes through, there’s a good chance my insurance company will dump me at some point in the future.

My pre-existing condition is not curable, at least not at this time. Something may be developed or discovered someday that will fix me. That’s called hope.

I’ve also been lucky enough to have the financial resources to pay for my doctor and my medical bills. I can still work, for one thing.

My point in is this: There are millions of Americans with medical conditions like mine who don’t have the financial circumstances I have and those are the people who need help. We can help them without trashing the entire system and starting from scratch. If that happens, if we dump the whole system, then I will be without when the time comes that I will be in the most need. And it won’t be just me who will be without, it will be EVERYONE who will be suffering. It will be my parents and your parents or our spouses. Because with this system that the government wants to implement, when we get too old or if there is no cure, we will be left out of medical services (partly because there won’t be enough doctors and nurses) and left to die.

This health care crap that they want us to live under scares me. It should scare everyone who has a parent or a spouse they love.

There have to be ways to help people who really need it without making everyone else suffer and do without. There has to be a way to make the system work for everyone without throwing the whole system out. It just seems that there are too many loud mouths on one side who are not willing to see any other options besides a communist one. It doesn’t work anywhere, it never has. Why do these dopes think it will work here?

Quote of the Day

“The spirit of Ronald Reagan is alive and well in America, exemplified by strong public backing for the principles of limited government, free enterprise, individual responsibility and a strong defence. The White House should sit up and take note: it is liberalism, and not conservatism, that is in decline in the United States.”

Good column and worth reading. Rush highlighted it on his show today.

Larry David marks a new low

Larry David, who has a series on HBO – Curb Your Enthusiasm – has finally reached a new low. I used to enjoy his show. It was funny; his self deprecating humor and his lack of reverence for the politically correct was refreshing.

Late yesterday, I read a story on BigHollywood about his latest episode where he does his own version of “Piss Christ”. Today, it’s big news on the Fox website with an attached poll.

“Was Larry David always this crude? Would he think it’s comedic if someone urinated on a picture of his mother?” [Bill] Donohue [president of the Catholic League] said in a statement. “This might be fun to watch, but since HBO only likes to dump on Catholics (it was just a couple of weeks ago that Sarah Silverman insulted Catholics on ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’) and David is Jewish, we’ll never know.”

Donohue is right. HBO “entertainers” only do dump on Catholics, and by extension, Christians. As far as I’m concerned, any attack on a Catholic is an attack on all Christians. It would be no different if his “jokes” were aimed at Baptists or Methodists. A Christian is a Christian, no matter what church they belong to, just as there are numerous sects of Muslims.

And this is not the first episode that David has made parody of Catholics. A few years ago, one episode dealt with losing a blessed nail (reminiscent of the crucifixion of Christ) that belonged to his father-in-law.

Can you imagine the death threats against David and HBO execs if this had been “satire and parody” about Muhammad?

This illustrates better than anything the difference between Christians and Muslims. Christians are not issuing fatwas. They are not calling and threatening the lives of HBO executives and their families. They are not taking to the streets and burning effigies of Larry David. Unlike Islamists, Christians do not turn to violence in situations like this. No one will find Larry David dead on a street corner (as Theo Van Gogh was at the hand of an Islamofacist) because he offended their sacred beliefs and images of God.

When will Jews realize that Christians, and Catholics in particular, are the best friends they have? Was it the Pope who proclaimed that Israel must be erased from the face of the earth? Are there warheads in Vatican City aimed at Tel Aviv?

Most incredibly, Jews, Christians (and supposedly) Muslims all worship the same God.

Andrew Klavan: Do Something!

Yesterday, fourteen Americans died in helicopter crashes in Afghanistan, the deadliest day for Americans there since June, 2005, in what has been the deadliest year for international and US forces there since the 2001 invasion. Meanwhile, in Baghdad, where Obama has ordered our troops into slow retreat, two massive suicide car bombs claimed hundreds of lives, including those of at least two dozen children, while destroying three major government buildings. And then, of course, came news that Obama had now played more golf while in office than our last president did in nearly three years.

All right, I don’t begrudge Obama the golf. It’s his dithering and cowardice I find shameful. During the campaign, he told us Afghanistan was the necessary war. In March, he told us he had completed a major review of the situation and come up with a new strategy. The commander he put in place has told him he needs 30- to 40-thousand more troops to finish the job. Civilians are dying in the war he wants to abandon. Our soldiers are dying in the war he swore he’d win. And Obama, caught between campaign rhetoric and reality, can’t figure out what to do.

Again, I’m not an expert, but I’m beginning to smell disaster, big time disaster. Is it possible the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will not only lose the war Bush won but simultaneously tiptoe by cowardly half-measures into a wearying round of useless American deaths before he’s forced to retreat from Afghanistan as well, having accomplished absolutely nothing? God forbid.

Andrew Klavan

Unacceptable. TheOne finds time to golf, to jet off for date nights with the wife, to drop in to raise money for his party’s candidates, to make a public appearance every single, stinking day, but he can’t find time to make a damned decision about the lives of our soldiers? He only found 25 minutes to meet with his general – in the last how many months – because of public pressure to do so. He shelved his general’s request for over a month.

In the (similar) words of that idiot Garofalo, “this is politics, straight up.”

A decision, either way is going to piss off a large segment of this country. He knows it. He’s afraid of it. It means loss of votes, in the end. But what he’s not getting is that pissing off a large segment of this country should not be the issue. The lives of our soldiers, and those of our allies, is what matters. The security of this nation should be paramount to him.

Our soldiers can’t possibly feel like they are being backed up. This indecision from their commander-in-chief cannot be moral boasting for them.

Good Lord! He’s spending precious time blasting Fox and anyone who gets in his healthcare way. He’s doing whatever he can to distract us to get his public option and his crap-and-trade shit through. And all at the expense of the soldiers who are defending and dying for our freedom and our protection. I can’t believe that this is all going past the understanding of our soldiers and their families. They see it. They understand what he’s doing or more correctly, not doing for them. This is one president who does not have the military behind him because he has so far shown them no leadership. Being Mr. Smooth-and-Cool President is not going to make them feel safer.

It’s time to make a decision and one that puts our soldiers and our security first, no matter what it is, and in Klavan’s words DO SOMETHING!
